Conservatives Vote Against Council Tax Rises at Sefton Council

At last night’s Sefton Council  budget meeting, Conservatives proposed investing over £750,000 in our green spaces and recreational services.

Tony Brough, leader of the Conservative Group on the council, said “We put forward a credible and fully costed proposal to improve our green spaces which in Southport could have been used to:

  • Clean and restore the lake at Botanic Gardens
  • Improve Hesketh Park
  • Refurbish existing equipment and purchase new play equipment at Kings Gardens

Our Parks are vital for the health and well being of our residents and we believe we should be looking to improve them.

We also asked that Labour remove the much hated temporary cycle lanes in Southport Town Centre and reinstate the parking there.

Labour voted down the proposals and have instead pushed through a Council Tax rise of 2.99%., which we opposed. The poor decisions taken by them, such as buying The Strand, have resulted in this significant increase.

For example, each year, Sefton Council has to pay £1.7 million to pay off the loan used by Labour to buy The Strand.

That’s equivalent to just over 1% of the proposed rise. If it wasn’t for this kind of financial mismanagement, we could be looking to cut Council Tax to help households across the borough. Instead, people are going to see their Council Tax go up because of Labour.”
