In research published last week, staff and patients recruited from Southport and Formby District General have been involved in a recent study into treatment's for Covid-19.
The tests were a success, and suggest that use of the low-cost steroid dexamethasone reduced death rates among the most severely ill Covid-19 patients admitted to hospital. The risk for patients placed on ventilators was cut by a third, and the risk for patients on oxygen was reduced by a fifth.
Chris Whitty, England’s Chief Medical Officer, said that the trial was “the most important trial result for Covid-19 so far”.
In a statement on behalf the Southport Conservative Association, the leader of the Conservative group on Sefton Council had this to say in support:

The Conservatives in Southport especially want to say a big thank you to all those local people, those patients and staff at Southport and Formby District General Hospital who have contributed to this important study.
Without people willing to take part in research like this we would not be able to effectively treat Covid-19 and we hope that their contributions will see life return to normal sooner than it otherwise would have.
